Certain tasks, like scanning for viruses or defragmenting the hard drive can take too long to complete and you may need to step out. In situations like these, an auto-shutdown utility can be very handy. A Google search is all it takes to find countless auto-shutdown applications. If you can not decide which one to use, Auto Shutdown might interest you. Its functions are very simple, so you can schedule an automatic shutdown without any difficulties and, at the same time, they are flexible enough to select different actions and triggers.

Auto Shutdown is freeware and it will take a few moments to install it on your computer. It works on all popular Windows versions, without using too many resources. The application comes in a small setup package, which can be downloaded fast, even with slower Internet connections.

The main difference between auto-shutdown applications is how they are used. Some of them require specifying an hour, clicking a button and nothing else, while others are far more complex, especially if you just need to shout down the computer automatically, at a certain hour. Cons:
Some actions can not be executed automatically when the computer is idle and others can not be performed on demand. Fortunately, this does not apply to important actions.

Thanks to Auto Shutdown, you can leave your house, while the computer is running, knowing that it will automatically shut down, go to stand-by, log off the user and more.

Pros

Besides shutting down the computer, you can schedule other similar actions. The software can schedule them after a certain time period, at a precise date and time or when the computer is idle. Additionally, the actions can be executed on demand, by using custom hot keys.

Cons

idering these aspects, it is safe to say that Auto Shutdown is very well balanced. Its options are organized under three tabs, on a small interface. You just need to click a series of radio buttons and a few check boxes and the software will perform various power related actions, according to a schedule or when the system is idle. The first tab is where you can schedule the application to log off the user, lock the computer, switch to stand-by or hibernate mode and, of course, restart or shut down. If you choose to shut down or restart the machine, you may tick an option to force running programs to close. To prevent shutting down the machine while you are still in front of it, Auto Shutdown will notify before the action is carried out and you can press a key to cancel. The aforementioned actions can be executed when a countdown expires or at a certain date and time. A few similar actions can be executed when the computer is idle. This is done under the second tab, where you just need to select an action and define a time period by typing a number. If Auto Shutdown does not detect any human activity (keystrokes or mouse movements), after your specify a period of time, it will lock or shut down the computer, switch to stand-by or log off the user. Some of these actions can be executed on demand as well. You may define and activate hot keys, for each action, under the third tab.
